Don't Forget to Turn Your Clocks!

Daylight Savings Time 2010 begins this Sunday, March 14th at 2 am. Big hint..... turn your clocks forward before bed..... Want to find out all the info on why we do this and the good, the bad, and well all of it? Then Head on over here and read all about it.So personally I dislike DST and so I may need to eventually move to: Arizona except The Navajo Indian Reservation. Also Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa do not observe. But how crazy is this? The Eastern Time Zone section of Indiana also does not change their time..... That would get really confusing!

Now good news
Arm and Hammer wants you to save money and change out your baking soda in your fridge. Go to their site to save up to $10.50!

Thrifty Thursday~ It's time for Census 2010

I got my mail today and sat down to open and read all thee things I had received. Inside was a letter explaining I would be receiving the census survey soon and to please fill it out and send it back. What's so important about this I hear all the time! Well the government uses the data they receive from the census forms to disperse money to state and local agencies. It directly impacts public transportation, campus safety, scholarship programs, and much more!

Census information affects the numbers of seats your state occupies in the U.S. House of Representatives. And people from many walks of life use census data to advocate for causes, rescue disaster victims, prevent diseases, research markets, locate pools of skilled workers and more.
When you do the math, it's easy to see what an accurate count of residents can do for your community. Better infrastructure. More services. A brighter tomorrow for everyone. In fact, the information the census collects helps to determine how more than $400 billion dollars of federal funding each year is spent on infrastructure and services like:
  • Hospitals
  • Job training centers
  • Schools
  • Senior centers
  • Bridges, tunnels and other-public works projects
  • Emergency services
Participation isn't just important—it's mandatory. (taken from the official census site)
We're asking all of America to "Take 10 Minutes" to complete and mail back their 2010 Census Forms.
Here's how we did in 2000 -- Let's do even better in 2010!

Census 2000 National Participation Rate: 72%

How well did your state/area do? Find out here.

In this economy and this day and age we need all the help our communities can get! I urge everyone to take a few minutes and fill out the census survey when you get it in the mail. It really does make a difference and thats what we are looking for right?!

I was compensated for this post. The opinions expressed in this post are mine and mine alone. For more information please see my disclosure policy.

What's Cooking Wednesday 3/10

Cream cheese chicken (slow cooker)

Ingredients:
2-3 boneless skinless chicken breasts
Salt and pepper (to taste)
2 pkg. dry Ranch or Italian dressing mix (we usually only use one)
1 can cream of chicken soup
8 oz. cream cheese – cut into cubes (I use the 1/3 less fat kind)
½ c. chicken broth

Directions: Brush chicken with butter and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place in crock pot and sprinkle 1 pkg. dry mix over all. Cover and cook on low for 6-7 hours. About 45 minutes before serving, add soup, second packet of dry dressing mix, cream cheese, and chicken broth. Cook until smooth.
Serve over rice or pasta.

This one is similar but with pork chops and it's yummy, too...

Creamy Ranch Mushroom Pork Chops
Ingredients:
4 boneless pork chops
1 packet ranch seasoning
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 soup can chicken broth
1 block cream cheese

Spray a crockpot with cooking spray, and put all ingredients but cream cheese in. Cover, and cook on low "all day" (At least 8 hours). Before serving, stir in cream cheese until melted. The sauce is also delicious with veggies!

These recipes were taken from my friend over at Melissa's Bargain Blog. I have not tried them yet but will be this weekend. Let me know what you think of them. Want to be featured on What's Cooking Wednesday? Link your post up here... and let the good cooking flow!

Baby's First Foods Review and Giveaway

There are So many things to remember when you have a new baby. Yet this is a time when for most moms our memory is put to the test the most. We are getting little sleep and yet having to take care of the most important thing in the world.
I don’t know about you but I love keeping track of every little thing with my boys and writing in their baby albums; but who has the time. I often say I am going to write something down and then I forget and a couple months later I am making up when I ‘think’ one of my kids did something.
That was until I ran across Glow Baby. Lindsay has you all covered when it comes to keeping track of things with your new baby. She has:

 Baby’s First Journal~

I was given the Baby’s First Food’s Journal to Review. I love the details in this book and how it is broke down into categories. The neat thing about this is not only do you have something to keep with your baby book to give to your child someday but it is wonderful for leaving with a sitter, family member, or anyone who might need to feed your baby yet has no idea their likes and dislikes. I have already used the recipe section several times. I mean how many times have you been at church, a friends house, or somewhere and found something your child really like. Even more how often have you read a recipe and thought this would make a great one to try? Well now you just write it in the recipes section of the book and have it handy. Here is one I have already added that I have to try:
Teething Biscuit Recipes - Vanilla Teether Shapes (DAIRY FREE)
1 egg, beaten
4 oz (1/2 cup) sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla
4 oz (1 cup) flour

Preheat the oven to 325 deg F, 160 deg C.
Place the egg in a bowl and stir in the sugar and vanilla.
Add the flour and stir in, until the dough is stiff.
Roll out on a lightly floured surface, then cut into shapes.
Allow to stand for 12 hours (it's a good idea to make these in the evening then leave the dough overnight).
Bake until golden and hard.

A really great idea is Glow Baby has a gift basket that is so wonderful for any Baby Shower or Welcome baby gift. I have a few friends expecting little ones this year; I may consider this. It includes:
·    Baby's First Journal (Green)
·    Baby's First Foods
·    Babysitter Notes
·    Shopping List
·    Medication Pad
·    To Do List
·    All products decoratively wrapped in clear cellophane and tied with matching ribbon

What's Cooking Wednesday 3/3

Pork Chops with Fried Apples
Ingredients
4 Boneless Pork Chops (remember the ones I got for less then a $1)
    seasoned salt
    5 Apples
    4 tablespoons brown sugar
    1/2 Stick of butter
    2 tablespoons Ground Cinnamon

Directions
Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the pork chops seasoned with season salt. In another pan heat butter till melted. Add 5 apples that have been peeled, cored, and sliced thinly. Add cinnamon and brown sugar. Cook till soft. Serve apples over pork

This is an extremely easy and affordable meal. Look for the porkchops at your grocery store when they mark down meat. Serve with pasta salad (recipe below) or your favorite side dish.

Rotini Pasta Salad
Ingredients
1 bag Rotini Pasta (I like the rainbow ones)
seasoned salt (or favorite spices, Italian seasoning works great!)
    1 bag of frozen peas
    1 can of corn
1/4 onion (I use red but any is fine)
Seasoned rice vinegar (or favorite salad dressing)

Directions
Cook Pasta according to directions. Drain and add frozen peas (Peas will thaw before serving). Add corn, diced onion, and season salt or spices. Mix well and add Rice Vinegar or favorite dressing. Can be chilled before serving.

*Tip this salad works well with tuna or chicken added into it for a one dish meal.

~~The above recipes were made with things I keep on hand. Overall both dishes might cost me $1.50 to make and serves 4 people with plenty of pasta left over!~~

Still not had your fill? Then head over to Preparing for our Children and see what she has cooking today!
